GIAC

Neighbors, Families, Visitors, Competition, Vibrancy — Imagine That!

A community recreation complex! Sounds exciting? It is for us at GIAC. We are excited to add to the redevelopment of this portion of our Northside neighborhood in a way that supports families, healthy living, social connections and a vibrant unified neighborhood. Here’s a look back on the transformation this square block has been experiencing over the last 26 years and into the future:

1993 – GIAC installed the Alex Haley Municipal Pool

2009 – GIAC renovated its facility modernizing it with beautiful aesthetic components

2012/13 – NYSEG & ICSD removed the Markles Flats building and invested in coal tar remediation at the site

2014 – GIAC’s Melvin Bell Outdoor Basketball Court reopened bigger and better

2015 – Ithaca City School District (ICSD) & NYSEG redeveloped and repurposed the Markles flats site as an outdoor softball park and additional recreation space/park land for students and families

2018 – GIAC renovated the kiddie pool, enlarging and modernizing it accommodate 70 bathers instead of 10 and making it fully accessible

2019 – Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services (INHS) bought the Immaculate Conception School site to construct beautiful, affordable units of housing; subdivided it to sell the gymnasium to GIAC

2020/21 – GIAC to renovate the Immaculate Conception School gym to add space for teen programming–animation/recording studio, screen-printing, basketball tournaments, community volleyball and more. This new space will fulfill GIAC’s programming needs but also add indoor recreation space for the neighborhood and community at large.

Please help GIAC complete another phase of this vibrant, neighborhood recreation complex. Help us raise $1,000,000 to purchase and renovate the adjacent Immaculate Conception School gymnasium. We invite you, the community, to have ownership in this project and welcome any support we can get.
